Action Research Overview
The action research agenda was part of the brief managed by CRO. We introduced this concept during the initial phase of consultation and subsequently
through ‘LAB’ days and one-to-one meetings. We explored how particular questions could help shape the literacy focus of the project whilst helping the
schools to meet their own needs identified in their school improvement plans. It soon became apparent that action research would be a developmental
goal for the majority of Stevenage schools involved in this project, and we endeavoured to provide appropriate support. As a result, many schools
expressed interest but noted that they did not have the capacity to respond either to action research or to the evaluation demands of this project.
As action research was not a compulsory component of the project, many schools did not participate in it, but registered its value and its potential
exploration in future programmes of development. A common theme that emerged for most schools was an exploration of the role and impact of
family learning in raising standards of aspiration, engagement and attainment in literacy.
However, three schools took the baton and are embarking on a programme of research, which allows them to investigate areas not previously explored in
the same detail or depth. These schools recognise that action research is distinctly different to summative evaluation. So what is action research? Our
understanding is the following.
“Action research is school and classroom-based studies initiated and conducted by teachers and other school staff. Action research involves teachers,
senior management and other school staff as researchers who systematically reflect on their teaching or other work, and collect data that will answer
their questions. This is often concurrent with their teaching.”
We that the initial findings, and the techniques used, are of value, and we thank Camps Hill, Giles Junior and Woolenwick Infants School for participating
and sharing their experiences with you.
