Broadfields Primary School

Broadfields Primary

At Broadfields Primary School we aim to ensure that pupils are encouraged to be actively involved in a rich and varied curriculum that they will find enjoyable and challenging, so that they achieve their potential and are able to shape their destinies and create a better future.

Staff involved in the project:

Melonie Syrett and Mitzi Blomfield were involved in this CfL project. Melonie teaches Year 2 children and Mitzi has a mix of Years One and Two.

Broadfields Primary interiorMelonie says: “Working with Claire seemed daunting at first. I was concerned that in their SATs year the children may not receive the curriculum input they required. However, my experience has been the opposite! Claire came to me with many ideas and I was able to explain to her what the children would need to get out of the project. By working together, we have created a fun, engaging and lively hands-on experience for the children that concentrates on using maths in art work. Since
working with Claire and seeing the positive impact on the children, I have tried to utilise creative ideas within my own maths teaching. This is something that has always been difficult for me, even though I love art and creative work. Claire has
worked closely with both teachers and has seen the difference in ability across the years. She has spent time redrafting documents and rearranging activities to fit best the class she is working with at the time.”

A description of the project from the teacher’s point of view.

Collaboration with the artist Claire Levinson-Gendler has led to inclusion of shape names and properties, measures, scale and multiplication within an art project. The children are involved in work that is based around the topic ‘buildings’, and have looked at a range of unusually shaped buildings as a stimulus to making their own
‘shape buildings’. The children will then use hammers, nails and coloured string to measure the spaces between the shapes and create a 3D look to their building. These ‘group’ buildings will eventually be put together to create a class ‘cube’. Later on the class will use their buildings to create a scale painted mural on the schools playground wall.
