Project Introduction
Andy D’Cruz working with Fairlands School
Andy carried out several main projects within Fairlands School. The school is on a split
site, so as well as ‘sliding up to literacy’, as Andy puts it, there was also an issue about
exploring the environment of the school grounds and getting a whole picture of the
site in the minds of the staff and pupils.
The projects covered the following activities:
• Rubbings
• Collecting photographs
• Collecting objects – bagging and tagging
• Tagging around the school grounds
• Collecting ‘field’ recordings
• Collecting personal objects
Each of the project pages offers a description of the activity, with most projects also
offering a downloadable worksheet as a guide to the activity and a powerpoint
presentation with pictures of the results.
Whispering school
You will also find some audio material on this site which is the result of collecting recordings of children and staff telling stories and reading them aloud.
The Whispering School project included Andy installing CD players in the air-conditioning vents of the school, playing the children’s recordings, and also
siting ‘whispering teddy bears’ around the school, each with a recording playing from inside it.
