Henry MooreHenry Moore Primary School

The Henry Moore School is a primary school of just over 500 children situated in the heart of Church Langley, Harlow. The school nearly 7 years old and every year has seen new changes and challenges faced by staff and children alike. We very much believe in educating the “whole child”. All children learn in different ways and thrive in different areas and we aim to provide the environment in which every type of learner can flourish.

Henry MooreThe Aims of our School

To provide a secure and caring environment in which the emotional, cultural, educational, physical, spiritual andsocial needs of each child can be met.
To promote a happy atmosphere in which children can develop to their fullest potential and in which theirnatural talents and gifts are recognised and nurtured.
To help children develop self confidence and self discipline and to have respect for themselves, their peers, theirteachers and the wider community beyond the school.

Each has a great and difficult task to perform:
to produce, from within themselves, an adult.'

Creativity for Life

Three of our teachers have been involved from the beginning with the Creativity for Life project: Sarah Symons (Year 4), Barbara-Anne Murray (Year 3) and Philippa Yates (Year 5). They have been working with sculptress Nicola Burrell on a series of topic-linked Maths projects.
Each year group took the topic they were working on and used this as the subject matter for their sculptures. Year 5 made a large head of an Aztec warrior, Year 4 made a life-size sculpture of an Indian woman and Year 3 made some World War 2 fighter planes. The skills we focused on were taken from the Maths curriculum area Shape and Space.
“Our initial aim was to work with the children in our year groups who are more confident in their approach to school. We wanted to specifically raise their level of achievement in the area of Shape and Space through practical, fun tasks. Nicola was just excellent – she worked brilliantly with the children, engaging and enthusing them and it’s been fantastic to see the progress they’ve made.”
(P. Yates, Year 5)
We then moved on to a whole school approach as Nicola worked with all the other classes. They looked at the properties of shape and how to use these to create abstract figures. By the end of this project, we are aiming for each child to have contributed to a final piece which will be installed in the school for all to see: a permanent reminder of the success of this excellent project!
