Kiran Rao Associate Consultant, Hertfordshire
Kiran has provided advisory support to this programme as an associate to CRO, bringing educational insight to help shape
and manage content. She has worked successfully with CRO on previous projects with clients including the Wellcome Trust.
Kiran is currently involved in developing high profile educational programmes, from the Artsmark Award to Building Schools
for the Future. Her interest in creative learning and community development has resulted in work for a diverse range of clients
both here and abroad, including educational agencies and institutions, urban planners, policy makers and schools. Kiran manages
multiple projects and has a solid track record of developing the capacity of arts and creative industries across arts disciplines.
Much of this work is with organisations undergoing change.
In addition, Kiran is a keen researcher, contributing to significant cultural studies, delivering a joint cultural framework to develop local audiences and
opportunities for community participation in London 2012 and developing an arts strategy for Thames Gateway, the largest regeneration programme in
Europe. Her personal interest in horticulture and design has led to successful commissions to redesign school spaces, including playgrounds. She brings
an awareness of spatial design and creative learning value to this process.
Kiran is a qualified teacher with a BA Hons degree in English and Literary Studies with History of Ideas. She is an adviser to the Refugee Council and
to the DCSF, and is a project team member of the Artsmark award. Kiran’s achievements have ranged from providing lasting and affordable quality
reading material for young people in Kenya (1993-4), directing the largest celebration of women’s writing in the UK (1995), and developing the
strategic direction of Europe’s largest Black dance touring company, Adzido, as Head of Education (1995-1998). She has provided consultancy
services independently and in partnership for the past 10 years.
