Leo Smith

Artist & Creative Practitioner

Within my art practice I employ a broad range of materials, media and approaches that include sculpture, text, painting, video, photography, textiles and drawing. These I tend to combine under the heading of installation, and they are employed in relation to the ideas and situations I’m working with, rather than having one particular medium or style. Narrative is a constant running through much of my work.. Recent works have combined fairy tales with current news information to create familiar tales with a contemporary and often unsettling relevance. Collaborations with other artists, performers and designers have also been a part of my practice. It is this broad approach to work, the possibilities of media and the
connections across art forms and creative practices that I try to introduce and encourage when working in education. I show how these are employed within the creative industries and demonstrate their potential connections across the curriculum.

Other Projects

Leeds Secondary Schools – Public Art Projects
Leeds Education/Leeds City Art Gallery

Working with three separate schools across Leeds during the Situation Leeds Public Art Festival. Encouraging the consideration of the school’s external environment for the sitting of a series of temporary art works, created in relation to the places they were to be made for and using a diverse selection of materials. (May 2007)

Leo Smith
Leeds Youth Group – Installation Project
Leeds City Council
Working with a group of young people (16-19) within the old Law Courts and Cells in and beneath Leeds Town Hall, to create a series site specific installations. Introducing a variety of artworks and approaches by other artists, encouraging research and the use of libraries and other sources of reference, and helping the young people to consider the best media to present their ideas. (June 2007)

Stoke Newington Secondary School – Student Entrance Light Boxes
Creative Partnerships, London
Working with a student management group and three design and technology classes to assist in the building of a series of light boxes and the designing/making of text and image based art works to be installed within these boxes. The 5 boxes were made to fit within the students’ entrance, a site selected by the students as being in need of improvement; and were also made to be a changeable exhibition space. (Jan – April 2007)
Walton Junior School, Wakefield – The Bully, Video Productions
Making a series of short videos where children, working in teams, had to develop stories to be used as a script, which then had to be performed to camera.
The theme of The Bully was chosen by the class teacher as a theme that she wanted to address in a creative way. Part of this project was managed at a distance. The children had to e.mail their stories and scripts to me and I replied with suggestions and encouragement, in advance of visiting the school to carry out the making of the videos. (Jan – Feb 2006)
