Roydon Primary School
Situated in the picturesque village of Roydon, Roydon Primary school is a small school of approximately 200 boys and girls from five to eleven years of age.
Our school believes that learning should be exciting, enjoyable and challenging. Our mission statement, “Promoting excellence for all by emphasising the
development of the individual”, was agreed by staff and governors, and is what we constantly strive to achieve.
The main building of our school was built in 1876, with later additions of a hall, dining room, library and classroom in the 1960s, and most recently a new
block of classrooms, Cedar Lodge, in September 2007. As part of the opening ceremony for Cedar Lodge, the Year 5 children performed a Samba
Procession to bring music from the old building to the new. Some of their percussion instruments were made from materials from the demolished
buildings.
We make great use of our outside learning environment,
which includes a woodland wildlife area, a pond, an
adventure playground, a swimming pool, extensive playing
fields and an amphitheatre.
Through the Creativity for Life project, we have now added
an outside Music Garden which enables music to be
something to be explored and enjoyed all through the day.
The children will develop an understanding of how music is
created and how to vary sound. By creating the instruments
from recycled materials, we also further our aim to be an
eco-school.
An early morning Breakfast Club operates every morning
and a wide range of after school clubs provide opportunities
for art, drama , a variety of different sports, ICT, needlework,
cookery, French, science and gardening. Roydon School is the
centre of the village community and is used by the ballet,
karate and archery clubs. The local dramatic society
performed The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in our
amphitheatre in 2006.
An ethos of thinking, caring and learning is encouraged. We enable our children to be active and enthusiastic learners, sharing ideas, opinions and feelings
and to be responsible members of our school community. Older children take on responsibility as Play Leaders. Librarians and lunchtime helpers and the
School Council has representatives from every class.
Our curriculum is organised in half-termly themes to enable children to apply the skills learnt in different subjects, across all curricular areas. The children
frequently visit museums, musical and dramatic performances, including visits to the West End and the Royal Opera House. French is taught in all classes
and Global Learning is integrated across the curriculum. We have special theme days such as Science Day, French Day and a Brain Awareness Week, which
helped children to know more about their learning strengths and how to be effective learners.
We recognise that “a happy school is an achieving school”.
