Project 11:
Paper Landscapes
Tany’s Dell’s most recent project has been to challenge each class to create a
model of the school grounds as they would like them to be. The children used
the knowledge gained from all the surveys and the questionnaire, together with
new ideas of their own to create their models. This provided opportunities to
develop and apply their knowledge and skills relating to shape, space and
measures, as well as design technology skills. Each of the models was presented
to the Children’s Committee and to Thadian (our artist). They will have a direct
impact on decisions regarding the final master plan, and will link back to our
original intentions:
Tany’s Dell - A Woodland School Half a Century On, Protecting
and Protected by Our Environment
An exploration was carried out of the relationship between the school’s
architecture and its landscape, to identify possible solutions to real life problems
(such as a south facing elevation that overheats) and to gently discuss concepts
of climate change and environmental responsibility.
Each class worked on a scaled base plan of the school.
This is the model made by Yellow Class (Year 2).
The design brief
To develop the landscape at Tany’s Dell School so as to look after and interest
everyone who comes to school.
The real-life problems
• To provide shade for south-facing classrooms
• To provide shaded areas outside the front of the school
• To designate an area or areas where grass can be allowed to grow long
• To create a welcoming approach to the school’s entrance with a built
structure or with planting
