Project 9:
A Landscape of People
The topography of Tany’s Dell
This project created an abstract sculpture representing each and every one of the
children and adults learning and working within the school. It involved accurately
measuring each other, then scaling the measurements down by 1:10 before
representing them in wood. The school intends that in the future the children will be
posed with the problem of how to recreate the sculpture at different scales to form part
of our master plan for the school grounds.
The activity included the children carrying out the following tasks:
• Measuring people’s actual heights
• Calculating the heights at scale 1:10
• Measuring the scaled heights on pieces of wood
• Sawing the wood to length
• Devising a layout for everyone’s individual piece of wood
Thadian then assembled the sculpture. The children investigated how to communicate
what the process had been, and what their calculations and tables of numbers meant.
