Vanessa Downie

Dance Creative Practitioner

Vanessa currently works as a freelance dance artist where - with a fiery passion - she is able to pass on the benefits of dance, particularly in school settings.
This fervour compelled her to leave a promising career in teaching; she is now in the process of setting up an organisation to promote and facilitate the provision of high quality community dance.
Vanessa works in a range of community settings, including primary and secondary schools and youth projects, as well as with adults who would not ordinarily gain access to dance. She has managed many successful projects, and has lead schools’ INSET to advocate further creativity in education.
As project manager for a recent dance exchange programme in Finland, she linked personal, social and health matters, as well as cultural and geographical education, to the essential platform of dance, and proved that this was of benefit to a group of ‘inner city’ young people.
This goal-oriented lover of dance has been known to lose out on a day of paid work in order to stay abreast of training and continuing professional development. Vanessa subscribes to several dance journals by organisations such as the Foundation for Community Dance and the National Dance Teachers’ Association.
